All We Ever Wanted

Psychbloke's photography gives an excellent account of the North Petherton Carnival so I'll register my concerns / elaborate through the medium of mime:

(YOU'LL HAVE TO TAKE MY WORD FOR IT)

There. That done, I think I can safely say that while the ethnomethodology might have been unusually understated - though the arabian theme was classily non-PC in these troubled times - the Dr Who float was a welcome diversion into the spazzed-out mainstream (only one Freddie Mercury this year? And no Marc Almonds?) which nevertheless seemed frighteningly ill-at-ease in amongst all the fat girl sandwiches and doorsluts and ladyboys...

Mm. The world is much more of a mystery to these carnys than the universe. The world is a war zone.

The young farmers float alone - think a thousand hairy britneys after the ninth wedding and before she finally explodes on Mars bar cramming and belly dancing - gave more than a White Papers worth of reasons to neglect the subsidisation of the farming industry...

And (look at the pic on Psychbloke's site) it's no wonder the cybermen were humanised oddly because these carnivals are always about being more than human, a cultural vanilla essence, a playing up of humanity (hence the carnivals proliferation in dead towns and vacant lot villages) - Ballardian and Burroughsian and Ianian all in one...

Which brings me to a track that appeared as if by magic on the mp3 cds before the carnival started, an MP3 I can never remembering burning from a record I haven't heard in ages...

Bauhaus - All We Ever Wanted

And the question remains, applicable to the Carnival, To Bauhaus and Bauhaus - did theystart out ironic and self-effacing and post-modern and knowing or did they bow to the pressure applied to people who take themselves seriously? Did they read portentous and pretentious one too many times before bowing meekly and pretending to come up smiling?

Or did they never bow?

Timely post, thanks for that -- just saw Bauhaus play again Monday evening, after all these years.

They never bowed.

Wasn't sure what to expect, but Murphy's voice is still pure and majestic and able to cut through the intestines like a knife.

"Terror Couple Kill Colonel" was pure pop. Third Uncle remains Best. Cover song. Ever.
