The Butthole Surfers

The first time I saw them they smashed their guitars up during the first song and then moped about awhile, looking for something to play.

That pretty much encapsulates the boys I think.

Later, one of my friends tried the Gibby trick (i think we saw it on Snub TV - remember that anyone?) of setting fire to their hand with lighter fluid and ended up in Casualty with what was laughing called a burn bag (think freezer bag and cream) strapped to his arm and a face full of high-grade pharmaceutical opiates.

That pretty much sorts out their fans.

22 Going on 23 is definitely the creepiest track to feature cows, personal agony and the wildest look-at-me-ma-i'm-plugged-into-the-stars bliss out guitar work this side of, I dunno, some Japanese psych-crazies with long hair and bad reputations.

Human Canonball is from the same album (Locust Abortion Technician)and highlights their (slightly) straighter rock n roll side complete with stops and starts in places you'd expect and a great sing-a-long chorus. A Karaoke classic for the kind of people who put that extra emphasis on the bit in Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody where he says 'Mother, I killed a man...'

I saw an X ray of a girl passing gas from Hairway to Steven is their lighter, more romantic side. A beautiful love song about the perils of love in a hospital ward. Open-backed smocks anyone?

And...oh, I can't be arsed to post anymore...their website has tons and tons of MP3 (really, a ridiculous amount) and pretty much everything is a classic of it's kind.

Of course, they aren't that many in that particular phylum so i guess theyre ain't exactly a whole load of competition but...

Nah. I really can't be arsed.

Anyway, many thanks are long overdue to Totally Fuzzy who are more than likely responsible for most of the hits on this s(h)ite. They are alwasy my first blog of the day and they should be yours - reams and reams of excellent links to generally excellent music.

Ah... you've inspired me to rip some of my butthole albums. It has been too long. I'm now listening to "jimi" as I type. f'ed up Texas dementia at it's best.

Thanks for reminding me!
