Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell takes place in the year 2029, a place where the boundaries between virtual reality, Artificial Intelligence and reality are dissolving. Citizens have computer implants which allows multi-directional information flow but which also allow psychological and behavioural manipulation on a grand scale, especially by hackers who can alter an individual's essence (their ghost) and are thus highly prized and/or feared.

The film is probably not quite as good as it thinks it is but it is still one of my favourite anime movies and has an excellently moody soundtrack which could easily have displaced some of the lacklustre offerings on the Kill Bill soundtrack (the RZA: there's someone who's nowhere near as good as he thinks he is).

Here's a few (the first is probably my favourite):

Making of Cyborg

Theme II Ghost City

Reincarnation

And if you'd like to see a sample of the film here's a Quicktime Clip

Finally, for those of you who like this kind of thing here's a comparison between The Matrix and Ghost in the Shell.
