Big Audio Dynamite

Throwing out a load of very old cassettes recently I came across my Big Audio Dynamite albums (just the first two - lost interest after that). I played them while mucking about the house and, well, they sounded quite good, I thought. I don't normally like anything that hasn't first been sanctioned by at least a dozen fellow bloggers so, just in case I ever fancy playing the albums again, I wonder what people think?

And, yeah, I broke my 'only listen to 3 albums' thing after two days.

i've been meaning to do a BAD post for this blog for several months - ask Ade, cos i was talking to him about it down the pub. first three albums are all good with me. sounding really fresh again...

"..ask Ade" seems to be translated in Babel Fish as "Just ask my Dad..." :) To be honest, although I could easily run off with the eerie synchronicities emerging again in the Idiots I think it's perhaps odder that we haven't yet blogged about BAD... when I was a kid I thought they were quite wild and they were certainly an influence on my earliest bedroom attempts at sampling etc...

Perhaps I had similar doubts about BAD's legitimacy - at least in terms of the wider critical view. Wouldn't want to appear foolish bigging-up something that everyone else felt was terminally unhip! Perhaps that's why I put the idea to Ade first. As I recall his response was something like "well, they were better than The Clash", which is quite amusing in light of Kek's sudden interest in 'Cut The Crap'. whatever, you've completely stolen my thunder now, so couldn't possibly write that post for at least another 5 years. Damn my procrastination!!

come on nick... let's have it...I'm sure you've got an interesting spin on BAD... don't be ashamed... write about it in here and no bugger'll read it anyhow...

well maybe, but not until I've had a good sulk first. anyway, i'm too busy writing complete nonsense about Marvel comics over at the annex at the mo.

What I'm finding fascinating here is that both of you seem genuinely concerned (or worried) whether BAD actually had any sort of, I dunno, cultural 'legitimacy'...normally you both just get stuck in and write whatever you feel, but here, you both seem kinda hesitant, which ain't like you...you both okay?

When I read Loki's original post, I chuckled cos you were sort've asking yr readers' permission whether it was 'okay' to cover BAD (were they actually any good, etc or was I mistaken when I was a teenager...?) whereas you nornally just jump on in, fearless of blogging peer-group pressure ("ridicule is nothing to be scared of" as A. Ant once said.). And Nick 'checking in' with Ade first to see what he thought made me chuckle too. It was kind've sweet and touching too. I just wondered what it was about BAD that engendered this unnatural hestitancy?

It doesn't matter if it's terminally unhip or whatever; everything's up for grabs now and it's the spin that you choose to put on stuff that matters, not the band/music as a noumenological object that exists in cultural isolation.

well, I just can't master inflection...

first I write in all seriousness about the Chico / Foetus parallels and people think I'm taking the piss and then I take the piss (the trepidation isn't mine - I've posted much less hip than BAD fer chrissakes) and people think I'm serious...

I'm gonna get me on a 'know your ironical writing' style seminar so that I can even these things out - i get the same when I'm teaching, no fucker thinks I'm being serious / being funny at the right moments... I mean, surely it was obvious that my Philosophy lecture series: "Why it's okay to eat the autistic" was meant in an ironic way?

Yeah?

Well, tell that to the Chair of the Special Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (Sub Comittee) - the mentalist fuckers

I need professional development...

"Cov-ered wa-gon, med-ic-ine sh-ow... take me to the place where the..."

I'm 1/64th jewish: 'we' don't do irony.

Ironic or no, my question still stands: why did you chose to adopt that approach for BAD then, and not (for example) Chico? Actually, I think it would've been cool if you'd 'asked' your readers if it was acceptable to cover Foetus?

Personally, I just can't master infection.

(Or is it diction?)

Now you've got me worried... you're dead right - maybe I do have some kinda unconscious musical status anxiety (cf those programs by Alain de Botton) which stops me letting rip... maybe it's not just BAD, there could be thousands of shite I'm fond of that's just waiting for the right ironical twist... and maybe most of it I'm not even aware of...

actually, that's made me think of writing a post about whether or not there is an entirely unacceptable artist out there? one unredeemed by POMO or revisionism, one so bad that there really is no merit to be sucked out at all? I'm sure there is, it's probably one of my favourites - i just have to think...

But then maybe that prospective post IS the method that my unconscious is using to get out some of this crap into the world - a terrible cathartic reaction that could destabilise my carefully organised record collection...

The only people that don't have some form of status anxiety are probably insane anyway.

"an entirely unacceptable artist"...now that's an interesting thought and not far away from something that's been on my own mind. I don't own any Gary Glitter and I'd like to get an old comp. of his early stuff ("Rock and Roll parts 1 and 2" etc) but he's been airbrushed out of history for, er, obvious reasons. people have actually destroyed copies of his records; you don't even see them in charity shops any more. Is GG "unacceptable" to the Idiots Guide bloggers, as an example? Loads of people own Charlie Manson comps without their conscience prickling them...so exactly what is unacceptable for the average punter, I wonder? Murderer-singers? Rapist-Singers? People used to watch Eastenders when Leslie Grantham was in it in the 80s (and he was done for murder), but it wasn't okay to have him in the program following his webcam frolics. What was that all about?

Personally, I deem Van the Man offensive. And Sting. Easy targets, I know. But, hey, why not....

Shit, Kek's called us out on that one and I guess he must be right. I think I'm losing my edge. All I can ay in defence is that I def wanted to post BAD at Idiot's Guide, which isn't my blog, and so I have to think hard b4 letting Loki host my dodgy viewpoints.

Yeah, Gary Glitter is now persona non grata, but if I had choice between shooting him or Sting in the back of the head...it would be a tuff decision.

All it was, Nick, was I was just curious why you seemed to be slightly hesitant about BAD, who aren't that, er, bad...nothing more.

"I think I'm losing my edge." LOL! Bloody hell, it's James Murphy...!
