The NWW List

Chance Meeting was never my favourite Nurse With Wound album, Maldoror reference notwithstanding, but it did start the ball rolling with the near-mythic NWW List of obscure entities, psychedelic knots, kraut effluvia and burned-synapse non-hit wonders. For a while, perhaps up until the breakthrough Nurse album Homotopy For Marie, the NWW List was Nurse With Wound, or at the very least the sound of Steven Stapleton and John Fothergill leaking out between the cracks of the bands mentioned on it.

The List created Nurse With Wound, forced an unwilling beast into existence because if you were gonna try and pull that much stuff together as a list of influences, side-effects and inspirations, then you'd better have a mythos of your own...

Just glancing across the names, finding familiar ones in amongst the impossibly obscure murk is a wonderous exercise; one born of deep-seated record collectors autism and if you look really carefully and recite the names over and again with your dusty friends alongside you clanking on chains and winding-up toy pianos you can just about re-create some of the early NWW tapes.

Add a snake for hiss.

Anyway, the point of all this is that the often wondrous WFMU Beware of the Blog have put together a whole shed load of obscurities from some of the bands on the List, dredging all manners of nasty viral vinyl in the process to come up with some real gems... there's MP3s galore right about here which should cause you to stop reading this right about now.

You'd only miss that I found this via An Idiot's Guide to Dreaming latest West Country recruit, the ever shipshape and, well, you know, Cloudboy.

That old cover is absolute genious, I have the reissued edition and they've managed to make it look like some discarded cover from a lefthanded out-of-work designer specialising in plasticine heads for korean disco bootlegs...Not that that would be a bad thing, but it just doesn't suit a Nurse With Wound cover...
Oh, well
