Pedro

Pedro is sort of like DJ Shadow in his more filmic mood. If DJ Shadow was any good. There is a old-school (can't bear that k thing; what do we have if we have no spelling) feel to much of his stuff and you often get the feeling it's put together on those crap casio samplers with sample pads and lion sound effects (remember them? i think the beatnigs - see earlier post - used them on a few tracks). Anyway this track has a lazy lope to it for most of the time, only occasionally erupting into wigged out drumology, brass stab wounds and free-form harmelodics. To my ears, this sounds less forced than DJ Shadow and certainly less polished than some of DJ's recent stuff. It's suffused with half-light and a grainyness that feels like a carcinogenic older relative coughing up blood and Marmite as the fog sets in on an old movie set. And you've got to love that the guy's called simply Pedro, none of that DJ this or Subliminal Kid that (btw it still bugs me that DJ Spooky's the least subliminal DJ around) or any of those names that smack of the kind of stuff kids called Colin and Quentin write on their roughbooks in school.
