The Origins of Dance

This track is almost nothing. You could tear it apart. Just a gentle wave of synth flush, the constant patter of tiny snare and hi-hats, a one-thumbed bass line, a few near-Clonks, an electrical version of that fish shaped scraper that the Der kids got to play in the orchestra, the odd snippet of Dreamfish era Namlook bubbling...

It's the Timothy Leary samples that carry the tune; all the melody comes from him. Tim's voice is no Terence McKenna but in this context it works really well, feeling detached and a just a little warm; a benevolent scientist watching his charges get out of hand and then smiling through the form-filling and LSD calibrations. It's an everyman kind of voice but here it sounds like everyone.

Whatever. This song was once pivotal in how I thought about music and even though The Grid went on to mediocrity and banjos, this remains one of my most treasured 12"s.
