PISSED-UP ON BOOZE
So whatever happened to Gallon Drunk? Well, they're very much alive and well, according to their website. Mainman James Johnston has recently become an auxilery Bad Seed too!
My brief obsession with 'the Drunk' was around 1991, after seeing a clip of them performing live on one of those pop shows of the day. The Word, probably. It was clear that Johnston was a fuckin' madman, looking like a bad Elvis impersonator, staggering around the stage spewing incomprehensible lyrics, throwing out random frazzled, chewed-up rockabilly guitar licks, then suddenly turning into Martin Rev for some devestatingly overdriven organ riffs. The living embodiment of hi-voltage Rock 'n' Roll mayhem!
Special mention for Joe Byfield, surely the most vital maraca player in the history of music. His constant, hissing top-end presence lending an added element of rythmic frenzy - it just wouldn't have been the same without him!
Gallon Drunk - Draggin' Along
Easily the best of the early singles by a mile. It's all here, folks. You'll find it on the CD "Tonite...The Singles Bar" on Clawfist Records, which I think is out of print. No doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that.
Right, I'm off now to buy some maracas....
